School construction is more than warm, safe, and dry.

Lisa Nelson founded Fix Our Schools RI, so she knows.

Lisa has saved Barrington millions of dollars on these projects already.

After learning that Rhode Island’s school buildings were in dire physical condition, Lisa founded Fix Our Schools RI to sound the alarm and come up with solutions. She brought everyone together who needed to play a role:

  • Students and Educators

  • Architects

  • Construction Companies

  • Energy Providers

  • Experts in Childhood Development

  • Public Health Research Scientists

  • State Agencies

  • Municipal Finance Officers

  • State and Local Elected Officials

  • Parents

  • Community Organizations, and more

She spent more than two years absorbing data and explaining how our school buildings impact health, educational outcomes, and municipal finances to audiences around the state.

Because of her work, Rhode Islanders passed an historic $250 million statewide school construction bond in 2018 that provides additional funding to communities for their school construction projects — including Barrington. Lisa created an inclusive space where everyone felt heard and could offer ideas.

For Barrington’s projects, she will continue to emphasize the importance of balancing 21st-century learning environments with the physical and behavioral health needs of students and staff.
